Niqab: A Quranic & Hadith Perspective

I ask Allah to enlighten us about the Niqab’s status in light of the Quran and Sunnah. Let’s begin with the Quranic verses:

“And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what is apparent of it, and that they should draw their veils over their bosoms.”
(Surah Noor 24:31)

“O Prophet! Tell your wives, daughters, and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks (Jalabib) over their bodies. That is better so they may be recognized and not molested. And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.”
(Surah Al-Ahzab 33:59)

Niqab: A Quranic & Hadith Perspective

Understanding "What is Apparent"

Some claim the verse allows showing the face and hands, but what is most apparent about a woman? Her face! Men are naturally drawn to it. The phrase “what is apparent” refers to unavoidable aspects like height and posture—not the face. This proves the Niqab is Fardh (obligatory).

Evidence from the Sunnah

The Sahaba women and Ummahatul Mu’mineen (Mothers of the Believers) covered their faces. Consider these Sahih Hadith:

Narrated Safiya bint Shaiba:
“‘Aisha said: ‘When the verse on Hijab was revealed, women cut their waist sheets and covered their faces with them.’”
(Sahih Bukhari 6:60:282)

Narrated ‘Aisha:
“Believing women attended Fajr prayer with the Prophet (ﷺ) covered in veils and returned home unrecognized.”
(Sahih Bukhari 1:8:368)

“When Surat an-Nur was revealed, the women of Ansar tore their curtains to make veils.”
(Sunan Abi Dawud 3577)

If Not Fardh, Then What?

Even if one argues the Niqab is Mustahab (recommended), why neglect it? The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“Allah said: ‘My servant draws near to Me with nothing more beloved than the obligations I’ve enjoined. And with supererogatory acts until I love them.’
(Sahih Bukhari)

Imagine standing before Allah and being asked: “Why did you ignore a Sunnah that elevates your rank?” What excuse will suffice?

The Reality of Differences

Scholars differ on its obligation, but even those who deem it Mustahab ensure their families observe it. The Niqab is a shield in this era of rampant corruption.

Final Reflection

The Quran is timeless. The Ummahatul Mu’mineen are role models for all Muslim women—not just Arabs. Ask yourself: Will worldly pleasures justify neglecting Allah’s commands?

“This is not my opinion but the fatwa of a prominent Mufti. May Allah guide us to the truth.”
